UK Electric Car Tests Reveal Average Driving Range of 23 Miles

June 17th, 2010 admin

One of the biggest perceived drawbacks of electric cars is the limited range. We are, after all, rather spoiled these days by fuel efficient cars and hybrids that can go 400 miles or more on a single tank of gas. But most people don’t need to go more than a hundred miles a day, especially city dwellers. Hell, most people don’t drive more than 40 miles a day. In fact, a recent study in the UK proves just that. Project CABLED is using a fleet of 25 Mitsubishi i-MiEVs to study the driving habits of city dwellers. Turns out most of these vehicles

Surprising Number of People Get It On While Driving
You don’t have to spend any amount of time driving to see people doing really stupid things behind the wheel, but we’re surprised by how many people are having sex while driving. According to Jabra, which makes phone headsets, 15 percent of people surveyed said they “have performed sex or other sexual acts” while driving....

Americans Slowly Warm to the Electric Car, Show Willingness to Try New Things
A new study published by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has found that more and more Americans are warming to the idea of driving electric vehicles, citing environmental concerns as the main reason for making the change. Over a quarter of the people surveyed described themselves as familiar with electric cars while 42% of respondents...

Japanese Team Pushes Electric Car 623 Miles Without Recharging
Driving in a Daihatsu Mira equipped with a huge 74 kWh lithium-ion battery and a brushless DC motor, the Japan EV Club has achieved a new world record for an electric car: 1003.184 kilometers (623 miles) without recharging. Although the team didn’t exceed 25 mph and was on a racing oval at a constant speed, the 8.4 miles traveled per kWh...

You Want Range? Mid-East EV Promises 2,236 Miles
The Middle East, awash in oil, is about the last place you might think of when it comes to electric vehicles. But a company in Oman says it will develop an electric vehicle capable of 2,236 miles on a charge. Yes, you read that right. And yes, we are just as skeptical of this claim as you are. Sultan bin Hamad al-Amri, chief executive office of...

Solar-Powered Van To Drive Itself 8,000 Miles
As much as I love driving, I know a lot of people aren’t all that fond of it. Need proof? Look at all the people who talk, text, read, or are otherwise distracted from driving behind the wheel. The Next Great Thing just might be cars that drive themselves, as so many sci-fi films have teased us with. The idea may still be rather far off,...
Rotary Engine As Electric Vehicle Range Extender?
Rotary Engine As Electric Vehicle Range Extender?
I’ve got a lot of respect for people who try to do things differently, especially when it comes to cars. We’ve been driving the same basic contraption for over a century now, from the engine to the suspension to even the accelerator. While I love cars, I also love the innovation and creativity I’m seeing from the alternative...

New York City to Buy 70,000 New Electric Cars
A study came out today saying that electric cars –both battery electric and plug-in hybrids –would make up as much as 16-percent of new car sales in New York City come 2015. That’s roughly 70,000 vehicles. But what’s driving these EV sales? Governments are expected to impose higher restrictions on CO2 emissions , for one....

Germany Study Says Electric Car Incentives Could “Plunder Treasuries”
Electric cars are coming; this much we know. After decades of promises, it seems like electric cars will finally be a reality. But it isn’t happening organically, or rather, due to consumer demand. Instead governments around the world are dolling out billions of dollars in low-interest loans and tax incentives to get people to buy electric...

U.S. a Likely Leader in Electric Car Market
I still find it hard to believe that mass market electric vehicles are right around the proverbial corner. In fact, until I’ve actually seen a Nissan LEAF or a Chevy Volt on the road, I refuse to be suckered in. There are people out there far more optimistic than I, however, and they see the future as looking more promising every day. The...

Audi A1 e-tron Extended Range Electric Concept to be Unveiled in Geneva
Pushing forward with its newly minted e-tron platform, Audi is planning on introducing a slew of new hybrids and electric vehicles over the next several years. This development is especially interesting in light of the fact that last year, Audi’s US chief, Johan DeNysschen, called electric cars playthings for the elite and said that anyone...
