Scientists Make Fuel from CO2 Emissions and Sunlight
November 26th, 2009 admin
Scientists from Sandia National Labs have successfully field-tested a machine that uses solar energy to convert CO 2 waste from power plants into fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Cylindrical in shape, the device has both a hot and cold chamber with 14 Frisbee-like rings in the middle. The rings’ outer edges–made of iron oxide–are solar heated to 2,700 degrees which forces the composite to lose oxygen atoms. As the rings rotate (one revolution a minute), they move in towards the cool chamber. There, carbon dioxide is added and the iron oxide composite takes back its missing oxygen atoms. The resulting carbon monoxide would be used in creating a synthesized liquid combustible fuel. Read more of this story

It’s been a busy Fall for the making-fuel-out-of-pollution-using-nothing-but-the-power-of-the-sun crowd. First we heard about a company that says it has succeeded in creating a system that uses engineered microbes in reactors out in the desert to eat carbon dioxide and poop out diesel and ethanol . Next we heard about a crazy mirror-ring...
In what could be a major breakthrough, Joule Biotechnologies announced that it has directly produced fuel from the plentiful carbon dioxide in the air around us using highly engineered photosynthetic microbes. Read more of this story

It has been decades since anyone decided to up the fuel economy ante and force automakers to improve their CAFE ratings. Believe it or not, former President George W. Bush got the ball rolling by requiring automakers to reach 35 mpg by 2020. But Obama, swinging the bola of Hope and Change, has pushed those standards up to 2016, while adding in...
This is one of those topics I’m just not sure what to think of… When the average person hears the term fuel cell , typically what comes to mind is something that mysteriously makes electricity from hydrogen.

Today the Obama Administration released a 1,200 page document of proposed regulation changes that will drastically alter the fuel economy and emissions standards that auto manufacturers are required to meet in the US. Although it could be an incredibly contentious topic, it seems that so far the proposal has gained wide support from all sides...
An analysis done by Biofuels Digest has come to the very surprising conclusion that an electric car will produce 30% more carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime than a car powered by E85 corn ethanol. Not only that, the study also found that the same electric car will produce 21% more carbon dioxide than even a gasoline powered car. These...
As part of a National Science Foundation grant program to examine cutting edge ways to make nature work for us, a team of scientists at Iowa State University have been awarded $2 million to unravel how some plants and algae can make hydrocarbons and discover if the genes that govern that process might be isolated. “These plants are capturing...
New projected 2009 US fuel economy figures out from the EPA show that we have now reversed a long-term trend of gradually worsening fuel efficiency since 1987—that bottomed out in 2004 at 19.3 mpg. While our international readers may find an industry average of 21.1 mpg and 422 grams CO2 per mile a laughable “achievement”—this...
Researchers at MIT have developed a new method of adding carbon nanotubes to lithium-ion batteries that give the batteries the best characteristics of both capacitors and traditional lithium-ion batteries while simultaneously increasing their energy storage. The experimental batteries, which used layered carbon nanotubes as the positive electrode...
I’ll admit upfront, I’m a Ford fanboy. I bleed Ford blue. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a car fanboy in general, but Ford is numero uno in my book… and now I have another reason to love the Blue Oval. According to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency, Ford has improved its average fleet fuel economy by 20% over...
