Just about this time last year I reported on the very promising and innovative Mcgyan® biodiesel process . It was one of the most popular stories gas 2.0 ran that year, and rightly so: the breakthrough seemed to deliver the possibility of making biodiesel in mere seconds from start to finish, reducing costs by half the price of other biodiesel, producing no waste, using no chemical reactants, and using any animal fat or vegetable oil as a feedstock. At the time the company in charge of the project, Ever Cat fuels, had only succeeded at making a small-scale pilot operation of 50,000 gallons per year. But, as of 2 days ago, the process has been completely commercialized. Read more of this story

Syntroleum Corporation and Tyson Foods have partnered in a 50/50 venture called Dynamic Fuels to produce a new high-grade renewable diesel fuel. Using a proprietary Bio-Synfining process and a feedstock of animal fats, greases, and vegetable oils supplied from Tyson, Dynamic Fuels will produce diesel fuel with the lowest greenhouse gas emission...
We’ve talked a lot about electric motorcycles here at Gas 2.0. But what about biodiesel ? Once the darling of many eco-modders, the fuel has largely fallen out of favor. But not with everyone. Meet the Metalback motorcycle concept. Designed by Jordan Meadows, a man with plenty of street cred when it comes to vehicular design. The Metalback...
A group of University of Kansas students have rigged up a 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle to run on a mix of biodiesel and battery power . The team, calling themselves the Ecohawks , claim the quirky hybrid is capable of getting 50 MPG from a series of 10 lead-acid batteries and a biodiesel generator. Performance-wise, although quite cool looking...
It’s hard to make sense of the Lexus LFA. The eye-bulging $375,000 price isn’t the only hard bit of math–the V-10-into-three-pipes equation is a tad odd, too. And yet it lacks the passion that gives the Italian style of idiosyncratic supercar-dom its legitimacy. But it’s still oddly…

Students at the University of Kansas have built what may be the coolest hybrid ever — a 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle series hybrid that burns biodiesel and gets about 50 mpg. The Super Beetle had been rusting away on a used car lot until it was donated to a mechanical engineering class led by professor Chris Depcik, who turned it over to...
Right now, refilling your electric vehicle is quite a timely process. Even the best EV charging systems can take several hours to fully charge a depleted battery, and while this might be fine and dandy for commuter cars, it makes living with an electric car as a daily driver a bit more difficult. But fast charging stations are coming, and could...
Last year I was a little taken aback when Koenigsegg teamed up with NLV Solar to showcase the Quant at the Geneva car show. While some Koenigsegg supercars supported biofuels (and actually made more horsepower on them), they never struck me as much of a green company. The car they designed was definitely influenced by their line of supercars....
In what could be a major breakthrough, Joule Biotechnologies announced that it has directly produced fuel from the plentiful carbon dioxide in the air around us using highly engineered photosynthetic microbes. Read more of this story

After a long process of on-again, off-again pseudo confirmations of potential sites, Norwegian EV company Th!nk has officially chosen Elkhart, Indiana, as the location of its U.S. electric car manufacturing facility. For a company that, as recently as a year ago, was swirling in the flushed toilet bowl of failed EV startups, this marks a major...
With the exception of a few very cool electrics here and there, motorcycles still run pretty much on dino-juice. Does it have to be that way? This cool concept suggests it doesn’t. Say hello to Metalback, a motorcycle that runs on biodiesel. We happened upon this cool idea while checking in with Bike EXIF , or favorite purveyors of two-wheeled...
